Owner, Principal

After a career in biotechnology, San Francisco native Irene Roqué decided to pursue a creative career that would make use of her keen eye for “beauty” and to fulfill her passions for fashion and interior design.  She also credits her career change decision to her first high school job of decorating Christmas trees!

Since 2006, Irene has gained invaluable experience working in San Francisco’s well-known luxury design firms under published designers on high-end new construction residential projects, high-tech commercial projects as well as pro bono projects benefiting children in the Silicon Valley, Oakland, and New Orleans.  Projects she has contributed to have been featured in magazines such as Sunset, Coastal Living, TRADhome, Rue Magazine, and San Francisco Cottages & Gardens to name a few.

As owner and principal designer of alo + hane DESIGN, Irene likes to call herself both an artist and an engineer.  As an artist, Irene is inspired by juxtaposing elements and infuses high contrasting materials and textures (weathered leather + slick lucite), vibes (street + polished), and price points (thrift + custom) into her designs.  As an engineer, she’s guided by her fascination with the details of development and collaborates closely with artisans, craftspeople, and builders.  Her technical background coupled with her unique aesthetic sense broadened more so by being in the industry for 10+ years results in eclectic yet harmonious spaces that are layered, textured, and soulful.

Irene holds a B.F.A degree in Interior Architecture & Design as well as a B.S. degree in Biology.  When she’s not designing, you can find Irene eating and thrifting her way through the cities she visits as documented below.
